Welcome back from, I hope, a restful, relaxing
and fun filled- family holiday vacation. Happy New Year to you and your
family from the Peirce School Staff.
As you know, we have been using the “Stop and Drop” process which has
been working fairly well. We still have some parents who get out of
their car to put on backpacks, etc. and hold up the traffic pattern on
Newland Road (and Blossom Street). Please, please, please help me to
keep your child safe by doing the following:
Go down Summer Street onto Park Avenue Extension, turn left onto Blossom
Street (which is front of school), take first left onto Newland Road so
that there will not be a traffic jam on Newland Road. Grade 5 patrol
students will take younger children into the building. Drop your child
off in the parking lot; have their backpack on so you may “Stop & Drop”
and traffic can proceed smoothly.
No one should use the inner circle in front of the school to deliver
children to the building or pick up children. It is a FIRE LANE and
should be CLEAR AT ALL TIMES for emergencies. PARKING IS NOT ALLOWED PER
ORDER OF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. The parking lot in front of the school and
in the rear of the school is for faculty use only. If you desire to
bring your child into school, please park across the street from the
school.
The parking area in front of the school is for TWO cars only; TWO
spacers are for handicapped use (the diagonally lined access area, as
well as the actual handicapped space). I have been notified that parking
in the diagonally lined space or the handicapped space is illegal and
the person(s) in these spaces could be fined $200.00. Therefore, please
do not park or drop off from these spaces!!!
Safety is a big issue for the staff and me. We value your children so
please help us to keep them “safe”. To all of you who have followed our
safety process, we “thank you”. Hopefully all our parents will make my
job and the safety patrol easier by following the “Stop & Drop”
procedure.
The week of January 12 all grades (1-5) will participate in a town wide
writing assessment. Students will be given a town wide topic to write
about using all of the strategies learned in class such as
brainstorming, graphic organizers, rough draft, editing and final paper.
The evaluation of the papers will be done at the home schools by the
staff using rubrics.
There will be NO SCHOOL on Monday, January 19th, Martin Luther King Day;
school will resume at the regular time 8:10 a.m. first bell, 8:15 a.m.
final bell (students in seats at 8:15 a.m.) on Tuesday, January 20th.
Thursday, January 29th and Friday, January 30th, there will be a two day
residency for children to learn folk dancing in preparation of the
Family Folk Dancing Evening, on Friday, January 30th in the gymnasium.
Some of the money for the residency was received from a Cultural Arts
Grant and some from the Peirce PTO. The event is sponsored by the
Enrichment Committee of the PTO.
Notices will be going hone the end of the month for Daffodil Day. The
purchasing of daffodils is a donation for the Cancer Society. More about
this school wide event will be forthcoming from Ms. Jacoby, Chairwoman
of the Daffodil Day event.
As we experience cold, cold weather, please make sure your child(ren)
is(are) dressed appropriately - hat, mittens, coat! As you know, once a
child gets a cold it is hard to get rid of especially during these
winter months. Enjoy your holiday weekend, January 19th!
Sincerely,
Marilyn E. Flaherty, Ed.D.
